The Independent Power Producers Association has called on the government to pay their fuel import bills at the current exchange rate instead of the rate when letters of credit were opened. They claim delayed payments by the Bangladesh Power Development Board have caused losses of Tk 7,000 crore due to the devaluation of the taka and appreciation of the dollar since March 2022. The Power Division is working on a draft law for true-up payments of the foreign currency portion of fuel imports, which, if passed, will be implemented from the date of the agreement signing. Producers are urging the government to apply this retroactively from July 1, 2022, to help mitigate losses and ensure uninterrupted electricity supply.
