In December 2023, Janata Bank disbursed loans totaling Tk 91,158 crore, with 76.33% allocated to 19 customers, and the top five customers owed Tk 48,866 crore, representing 53.60% of the total loans. A significant portion of these loans was concentrated in Dhaka and Chittagong. However, the bank faces challenges in timely collection, with six of the top borrowers already defaulting, accounting for 81.21% of the total defaulted loans.
As of December, defaulted loans amounted to Tk 17,501 crore, representing 19.20% of total loans disbursed, with six institutions accounting for Tk 14,213 crore. By March, non-performing loans had risen to Tk 30,495 crore, or 31% of disbursed loans. Â The top customers of Janata Bank include several specialized industrial groups, with the Anontex Group topping the list, followed by the Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), Crescent Group, Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC), and others. These loans raise concerns about concentration risk and moral justification, given the banking sector’s crisis.
