The power grid of Bangladesh urgently needs preparation to accommodate sophisticated power sources, such as the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant, which is scheduled to evacuate 2,400 megawatts of power in the coming years. This recommendation comes from a recent study report by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). JICA’s study suggests several key actions: upgrading the national load dispatch centre, enhancing the capacity and technology of the centre, and implementing training and capacity development programs for officials to manage the complexities associated with new power sources.
The study aligns with the Integrated Energy and Power Master Plan, which anticipates multiple grid- and household-level renewable energy sources coming online, adding further complexity to the power grid. The JICA conducted this study following the national grid failure and subsequent countrywide power blackout on October 4, 2022.
