Bangladesh’s monthly inflation rate marginally declined by 0.05 percentage points to 9.69% in July, indicating some stability despite the imposition of tax measures in the FY2023-2024 budget. Although economists expected an acceleration in inflation during June and July, this did not materialize. The government aims to keep inflation at an average of 6% for FY24. Food inflation in July was 9.76%, showing a slight upward trend, while non-food inflation dropped to 9.47%. Rural areas continue to experience higher inflation (9.75%) compared to urban areas (9.43%). The central bank introduced the SMART (Six-Months Moving Average Rate of Treasury Bill) interest rate to manage inflation, currently set at 7.10%, but economists suggest higher interest rates to curb inflation effectively.
