Kalurghat Rail Bridge Replacement Faces Funding Delays

Industry: Logistics, Logistics & Shipping

The replacement of the century-old Kalurghat rail bridge near Chattogram, funded by a Tk 140-billion project, faces delays as the Korean Economic Development Cooperation Fund postponed the contract-signing schedule until February 2024 due to the January 07, 2024 general election. The deferment impacts the project timeline, with no consultant selection for design work or approval for the development project proposal. The bridge’s importance has risen with the development of a new rail track from Dohazari to Cox’s Bazar and Matarbari Deep-sea Port. The Bangladesh Railway had strengthened the bridge for train operation until replacement. The project, initiated in 2012, aims to enhance rail connectivity in the region.
