The Bangladesh Competition Commission has imposed fines on Kazi Farms and Suguna Food and Feeds Bangladesh Private Limited amounting to Tk 8 crore in total for an unusual increase in broiler chicken prices.
The companies were penalized under Section 15 of the Competition Act, 2012, prohibiting agreements or collusions causing adverse effects on competition. Kazi Farms faces a Tk 5 crore fine, while Suguna’s penalty is Tk 3.44 crore. The firms must pay within 10 working days, with a daily Tk 1 lakh additional fine for delays. Both companies can appeal the decision to the commerce ministry. The commission filed 44 cases in 2022, addressing an artificial crisis and abnormal price hikes in various commodities, including poultry.
