In the first quarter of the fiscal year 2023-2024, Bangladesh’s knitwear exports surged by 19.70%, reaching $6.76 billion, outperforming woven garment exports, which grew by 4.97% to $4.85 billion. Total Ready-Made Garment (RMG) exports for July-September stood at $11.61 billion. For the fiscal year 2022-23, Bangladesh achieved a 10.27% YoY growth, exporting garment items worth $46.99 billion.
Knitwear shipments grew by 10.87% to $25.73 billion, while woven garments saw a 9.56% increase, reaching $21.25 billion. The knitwear sector’s success is attributed to shorter lead times, domestic raw material availability, and changing global fashion trends. Local spinners, with high investments, supply over 90% of knitwear raw materials. Conversely, woven sector raw materials heavily depend on imports, constituting 60%. Sweater exports, falling under knitwear, reached $5.94 billion last fiscal year. The knitwear sector’s resilience during the pandemic and changing consumer preferences post-COVID contributed to its dominance.
