In August, Bangladesh witnessed a significant drop in labor exports, with only 50,426 workers sent abroad, marking a 29% decrease from July and a 63% year-on-year decline. This sharp reduction, the lowest in 35 months, is primarily attributed to political unrest following widespread student protests, which culminated in the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led government on August 5. The political instability particularly impacted employment opportunities in Saudi Arabia, the top destination for Bangladeshi workers, where job placements dropped by 44%. The Saudi embassy’s suspension of visa processing during this period further exacerbated the situation.
Additionally, the closure of Malaysia’s labor market contributed to the decline in foreign employment over the last three months. Despite these challenges, recruiters remain hopeful that labor exports will recover as the political climate stabilizes.
