The power and energy sector faces inconsistencies and inefficiencies due to a lack of a cohesive policy framework and arbitrary decision-making. A comprehensive and coordinated policy integrating the entire sector and ensuring stakeholder participation is needed. Despite numerous plans, the sector lacks robust policy backing, and the National Energy Policy (NEP) of 1996 remains mostly unimplemented. Efforts to update the NEP in 2004 failed, and a renewable energy policy in 2008 saw questionable execution. The sector suffers from a crumbling structure and poor coordination among stakeholders, highlighting the need for private-public partnerships. Specific policies for solar power in irrigation and housing are necessary, alongside reliable data flow from government agencies. Sustainable renewable energy should be a crucial goal, addressing both short and long-term challenges. Effective energy policies should consider grassroots issues and provide mid to long-term solutions. Rooftop solar power generation should be prioritized over exploiting agricultural land, and dependence on diesel, furnace oil, or imported solar panels should be minimized.
