Approximately two-thirds of the 25 companies authorized to cultivate vannamei shrimp in Bangladesh have been unable to start production due to a lack of essential technology and investment. Only 7-8 companies have begun experimental cultivation, with just one completing its first production cycle. High production costs and insufficient investment have hindered progress, despite regulatory support and a growing global demand for vannamei shrimp, which holds an 83% share of the $32 billion global shrimp market.
The Bangladesh government authorized vannamei shrimp cultivation to boost declining shrimp exports, which fell by 24% from July 2023 to May 2024. Seamark BD Limited is one of the few companies successfully cultivating vannamei shrimp using advanced technology, while others struggle with high initial costs.
