Farmers and orchard owners in Moulvibazar are facing losses despite a bumper lemon harvest due to low prices and a lack of cold storage. Lemon prices drop during the peak season due to surplus supply, leading many farmers to leave the fruit on trees due to unprofitability. The cost of production often surpasses sale prices, making harvesting uneconomical. Lemon cultivation covers about 1,719 hectares of land in the district, with different varieties cultivated in various upazilas. Lemon prices have fallen to Tk 1 per piece in the wholesale market of Sreemangal. Farmers suggest that government support or cold storage facilities could help alleviate losses and support the agricultural economy.
