In early November 2023, the price of lentils in Bangladesh rose by Tk 5 to Tk 10 per kg. Over the past month and a half, large-grain lentils increased from Tk 100 to Tk 120 per kg, and small-grain lentils increased from Tk 130 to Tk 145 per kg. Retail traders report that sacks (25 kg) have risen by Tk 100 to Tk 150 at the wholesale level in the last two to three days. The wholesale market price for a bag of coarse-grain lentils increased from Tk 2,500 to Tk 2,650 over a week. The Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute states that the country’s annual demand for pulses is around 2.8 lakh tonnes, and local production accounts for 9 to 10 lakh tonnes. Most pulses are imported from Australia, Canada, and Nepal, and the recent increase in prices is attributed to a dollar crisis affecting importers’ ability to open LC, reducing imports and increasing prices.
