Life insurers in Bangladesh reported around 3.47 lakh policy discontinuations from January to September 2024, due to clients’ financial difficulties, political changes, and floods. Unclear policy data and low customer confidence also contributed. In 2023, 15.42 lakh policies lapsed across 36 companies, with little improvement this year. Delta Life Insurance led in policy lapses, followed by National Life Insurance and Popular Life Insurance. Other significant lapses were seen at Pragati Life Insurance and Alpha Islami Life Insurance. Policy lapses, caused by non-payment of premiums, harm both customers and insurers. Factors include economic hardship, high inflation, and agent transfers. Efforts are being made to revive lapsed policies with incentives. The Insurance Development and Regulatory Authority is monitoring companies to reduce lapses. Over the past 14 years, over 26 lakh policies have lapsed, decreasing from 1.12 crore in 2009 to 85.88 lakh in 2023.
