The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court in Dhaka has formally charged multinational company Linde Bangladesh Limited with fraud, following a case filed in September 2022 by Connect Distribution Limited, Linde’s sole distributor. Allegedly, Linde Bangladesh failed to pay Connect Distribution for transporting empty gas cylinders, despite contractual obligations spanning from January 2019 to February 2022. The lawsuit named Linde Bangladesh Managing Director Sujeet Pai, Advisor to the Managing Director Erfan Shihabul Matin, and Associate Director Chowdhury Nurur Rahman among the defendants. While Sujeet Pai is currently absconding, the others are out on bail. After a year-long legal battle that included a dismissed stay order from the High Court in October 2023, the CMM court ordered charges to be framed against Linde Bangladesh. Despite recent business declines prompting Linde’s exit from the welding rod business in Bangladesh, the company surprised the market with a record 1,540% dividend announcement in June, significantly higher than its previous highs of 400% to 500%.
