The biscuit market in Bangladesh holds significant potential, with exports reaching around 70 countries. However, the volume of exports remains relatively low. Despite experiencing growth in recent years, biscuit exports from Bangladesh slightly declined in the fiscal year 2021-22, and this negative trend has continued into the current fiscal year, with a 27 percent drop in the first 10 months. Biscuit exporters are facing challenges in competing with other countries due to the increased prices of raw materials like flour and sugar. Bangladesh has lost a considerable portion of its biscuit market in the Middle East to India, primarily due to the lower cost of sugar in India compared to Bangladesh.
Moreover, the imposition of sugar tax in certain countries has prompted Bangladesh’s competitors to use fructose as an alternative, which cannot be imported by Bangladeshi exporters due to high duties. In fiscal year 2021-22, the country exported biscuits worth USD 5.4 million, and Saudi Arabia stands as the largest market for Bangladeshi biscuit exports. While Bangladesh currently has a small share of the global biscuit market, there is potential for expansion, particularly as biscuits have a universal appeal. Despite the recent decline in exports, the overall potential remains high, as Bangladesh can offer competitively priced biscuits compared to importing countries.
