Over the past two fiscal years, consumption growth in Bangladesh has remained low as high inflation eroded spending power. Provisional estimates by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) show that consumption of goods and services grew by 3.53% in 2023-24, up from 2.52% the previous year. This marks a significant decline from the over 6% growth seen since 2016-17, excluding the pandemic-hit 2019-20 when growth was 2.9%. The economy has faced pressure from depleted foreign currency reserves and rapid depreciation of the taka, leading to record inflation rates. Average inflation soared to 9.02% in 2022-23, compared to the 6% average of recent years, with the Consumer Price Index rising by 9.5% in the first ten months of FY24. With wages lagging behind rising prices, low-income individuals have reduced consumption, savings, and spending on education and health. Private consumption is projected to grow by 3.32% in FY24, after a 1.98% increase in the previous year.
