LPG Imports Drop from 1.4 to 1 lakh Tonnes

Industry: LPG

Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) imports in Bangladesh have decreased due to difficulties in opening Letters of Credit (LCs) amid the ongoing dollar crisis. Monthly LPG imports, primarily used for cooking in households, have dropped from 1.4 lakh tonnes to nearly 1 lakh tonnes since July 2023.

While Bangladesh’s annual LPG demand is around 14 lakh tonnes, only 2% is produced locally, with the remaining 98% met by imports. However, the supply shortage is expected to be offset by reduced LPG demand in rural areas and industries due to economic vulnerabilities. Despite the decline in imports, there is currently no immediate supply deficit, according to the Chairman of the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission.
