For the fiscal year 2023–24, there was a notable increase in VAT collection, according to Bangladesh’s Large Taxpayers Unit (LTU). Increased taxes from industries like banking, telecom, and tobacco caused the unit to significantly above its income objective.
Compared to the prior year, VAT payments by large enterprises increased by 26%. Telecom and tobacco conglomerates are those businesses. Contributions to VAT revenue were highest from the top three mobile phone providers and cigarette industries. Every day, the banking industry grows. Banks’ ability to collect VAT was enhanced by new services, an increase in bank clients, and greater excise duties. Certain industries, like gas, electrical items, and telecom equipment, witnessed a notable increase in VAT, while other industries, like cement, hotels, and beverages, saw a decrease. There is nevertheless cause for concern due to the government’s reliance on telecom and tobacco revenue as well as the sizable informal sector.
