The Bangladeshi government is considering setting up LNG and solar-based power plants in Cox’s Bazar’s Maheshkhali power hub, as part of its efforts to transition to renewable energy and combat climate change. The plan involves establishing 1,200MW LNG-based and 50MW solar plants in each of the first seven blocks of the hub. The power hub was originally designed for coal-based plants, but the government has now reconfigured the plan into 11 blocks. The allocation of blocks for LNG and solar plants is still under review. The government aims to generate a total of 13,560MW of power from the Maheshkhali Power Hub. Feasibility studies have already begun for gas-based combined cycle and grid-tied solar power plants in the hub. The government plans to boost its power from renewable energy to 40% by 2041.
