Maize cultivation in Bangladesh has surged, reaching a record 6.72 lakh hectares in FY 2024-25, up from 6.42 lakh hectares in FY 2023-24. The Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE) set a production target of 69.78 lakh tonnes for FY 2024-25, while the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) estimated output to reach 52 lakh tonnes. Maize now ranks as the second-largest cereal crop after rice, replacing wheat due to its higher profitability. The Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) recorded 45.6 lakh tonnes of maize production in FY 2022-23. The domestic feed industry consumes over 60 lakh tonnes annually, with local production meeting 85% of demand. Farmers report consistent demand, with prices expected to exceed Tk 1,300 per maund. Despite high-yielding local seed varieties, most maize seeds are imported. The Bangladesh Wheat and Maize Research Institute (BWMRI) has developed 20 varieties, yet expansion is hindered by limited land for seed production.
