Mango growers and traders in Chuadanga are disappointed with the current low prices of their produce, which have dropped significantly within just two weeks of the official harvest, nearly halving compared to the previous season. This has raised concerns among them as they fear potential losses if the wholesale market continues to perform poorly. Despite an abundant supply of Ati, Guti, Bombay, and Himsagar mangoes in the market, demand remains remarkably low leading to wholesale prices ranging from Tk 1,000 to Tk 1,200 per maund for Bombay mangoes, Tk 350 to Tk 500 per maund for Ati and Guti mangoes, and Tk 1,200 to Tk 1,400 per maund for Himsagar mangoes.
The situation is disheartening for the farmers, who witnessed much higher prices in the previous year, and they worry about sustaining themselves if mango prices continue to remain low. The excess supply of mangoes compared to current demand is attributed to the price decline, with hopes that the market will pick up soon and prices will increase as the demand for litchi decreases.
