Manufacturers Struggle with Losses Amid Unrest

Industry: Heavy Industry

Manufacturing companies across various sectors—food and beverages, textiles, and cement—are struggling to recover from losses incurred during weeks of nationwide unrest, including government-imposed curfews, internet blackouts, and vandalism following the resignation of the previous government.

Many firms are concerned about both direct financial losses and indirect impacts, such as damage to their reputations and vandalism. ACI, a food manufacturing company, reported that it had to halt production for five days, and seven of its retail outlets under the Shwapno brand were looted. They have yet to tally their total losses.

The textile industry, which represents 84% of exports, has suffered approximately Tk. 50 million in daily losses over the past two weeks. The BGMEA President noted that despite the shutdown, they must still pay Tk. 10 billion in wages. Out of 2,200 garment companies, 58 are publicly listed and are now anticipating lower revenues and dividend payments in the coming year.
