M Masrur Reaz, a prominent economist and public policy analyst, has declined the position of chairman at the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC), despite his recent appointment by the finance ministry. The role became vacant after the resignation of Prof Shibli Rubayat-Ul Islam following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government. Initially, Reaz expressed his intent to tackle corruption and improve governance in the stock market. However, he later decided to remain in his current role, emphasizing his commitment to driving economic policy and reform. Reaz believes his expertise is better utilized in promoting policy analysis and dialogue to enhance trade, investment, and financial development. His decision came amid mixed reactions from the BSEC Officers Welfare Association, who initially opposed but later supported his appointment.
