The first unit of the Matarbari Ultra Super Critical Coal Fired Power Plant is set to commence operations in November 2023. Located in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh, the project has completed its construction and successfully conducted trial production, generating 600 MW of power in September. The Coal Power Generation Company Bangladesh Limited (CPGCBL) is overseeing the project, with the second unit expected to generate power by March 2024.
The plant’s strategic location near the sea, protected by a 14-meter embankment, ensures resilience against cyclones and tides. It aims to generate a total of 1,200 MW power over seven years, with funding from JICA. The project, implemented by a consortium including Sumitomo, Toshiba, IHI, and POSCO E&C, has employed approximately 4,000 local workers daily to support the region’s economy. The total project cost is Tk518.5488 billion, with contributions from various sources.
