The first unit of the Matarbari Coal-Fired Power Plant in Bangladesh has been synchronized with the national grid, generating 150 MW of electricity. The power plant, with a total capacity of 1,200 MW and two units, is being set up in the Matarbari and Dhalghata unions of Maheshkhali upazila in Cox’s Bazar district. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is financing the project, which also includes a deep-sea jetty for coal unloading. The project aims to add 600 MW of power before the inauguration and expects full operation by December 2023, ahead of the scheduled commissioning in January 2024. The second unit is planned to be commissioned in July next year. The project has taken measures to prevent environmental pollution during the coal unloading process.
