In August, Bangladeshi migrant workers sent home Tk 1,101.8 crore in remittances via mobile financial service (MFS) providers, marking the highest monthly receipts in five years and a 113% increase from Tk 515.4 crore in August 2023. This surge provides hope for improving the country’s dwindling foreign exchange reserves, currently around $20 billion, down from $40.7 billion in August 2021. The rise in remittance transactions through MFS is attributed to banking disruptions, increased technology usage, a 2.5% government incentive, and cash benefits from providers like bKash, Nagad, and Rocket. MFS facilitated 54.21% more remittances compared to July, with total remittances increasing nearly 39% year-on-year to $2.2 billion in August.
