Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) reveals that 52% of international migrants pay high fees to brokers for migration, with rural areas exhibiting higher reliance (53.10%) compared to urban areas (48.25%). The “Report on Socio-Economic and Demographic Survey 2023” highlights that regions like Sylhet and Mymensingh have the highest dependence on brokers, while Barishal and Khulna show lower rates. The involvement of brokers significantly inflates costs, with 42.09% of migrants paying private companies and only 3.09% using government services. Most migrants rely on borrowing to cover expenses, with rural areas showing a higher borrowing rate. The government is working to regulate brokers through the “Overseas Employment and Migrants (Amendment) Bill-2023” to control costs. The survey also emphasizes the need for skill development among migrants to reduce dependency on brokers and avoid exploitation.
