In the proposed budget for the fiscal year 2024-25, Finance Minister suggested rationalizing the minimum value of certain imported products, such as cotton and synthetic fabrics, to safeguard the local industry. The minimum value of cotton fabrics and printed cotton is proposed to increase from $3 to $4 per kilogram, while synthetic fabrics may see an increase from $3 to $4.50 per kilogram. Additionally, a 1% customs duty is proposed on purified terephthalic acid and mono-ethylene glycol, essential raw materials for polyester staple fiber and pet chips used in the textile industry. These measures aim to address discrepancies in tax incidences between finished goods and raw materials while supporting domestic industries.
