The commerce ministry has instructed district administrations to enforce the government-fixed rates for potato sales at cold storages. The directive mandates Deputy Commissioners (DCs) to ensure potatoes are sold at Tk 26-Tk 27 per kilogram.
This comes after the commerce ministry permitted potato imports in response to soaring domestic prices. Today, potatoes reached an unprecedented Tk 65 per kilogram in Dhaka markets, despite a higher production estimate of 1.04 crore tonnes compared to the previous year. The government, on September 14, set rates at Tk 26-Tk 27 per kg at cold storage and Tk 35-Tk 36 per kg at retail.
However, traders are currently exceeding these rates. The ministry cites The Control of Essential Commodities Act-1956 as the basis for its decision to stabilize the market for public benefit.
