MJL Bangladesh has finalized a $75 million deal with South Korea’s DH Shipbuilding to acquire a third-generation oil tanker. The vessel, set to be launched in Q1 2026, will be LNG-ready and have an impressive capacity of 115,000 deadweight tonnes (DWT), making it the largest ship flying the Bangladesh flag.

Currently, Bangladesh has over 60 ocean-going ships with its flag, but none have a capacity of 115,000 DWT. MJL Bangladesh owns one LR2 tanker built in 2005 and three LPG carriers. The decision to invest in a new vessel was driven by rising prices and higher maintenance costs associated with secondhand vessels. The managing director of MJL Bangladesh, emphasized the economic advantage of a new tanker, as it generates higher revenues over its 24-year operational life compared to a used vessel.
