The Telecom Minister of Bangladesh has ordered mobile operators to reinstate seven-day data packages at the price of previously discontinued three-day packages until the national election in January. This decision came following a meeting involving top officials from the telecom ministry and the telecom regulator.
Operators have been given until November 10, 2023, to adjust their pricing. However, mobile operators argue that this government-mandated pricing is not commercially viable for them, likening it to selling a smaller product for the price of a larger one. The Telecom Minister defended the directive, accusing operators of increasing prices to discredit the government ahead of the election.
The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission has been instructed to enforce strict measures, and no alterations to data prices will be permitted before the election. Operators requested three months to comply, but the ministry rejected their request. The decision is aimed at ensuring that the younger generation continues to use data during the election period.
