Bangladesh’s mobile subscriber base declined by 12 lakhs to 18.75 crore in December 2024, marking six consecutive months of contraction, according to BTRC data. Between July and December, operators lost a total of 75 lakh customers. Industry leaders attribute the downturn to the increase in SIM taxation from Tk 200 to Tk 300, discouraging multiple SIM ownership and limiting access for marginalized communities. Banglalink faced the steepest drop, losing 7.5 lakh users, while Robi lost 4 lakhs, and Grameenphone saw a marginal decline of 30,000 subscribers. State-run Teletalk’s user base remained unchanged. Additionally, mobile phone ownership among individuals aged 15+ declined to 74.2% in 2023, continuing a downward trend since the pandemic. A 23.2 percentage point gender gap in mobile ownership further underscores digital inequality, highlighting the need for targeted interventions.
