A research report by the Implementation Monitoring and Evaluation Division (IMED) highlights the slow progress and challenges faced by Bangladesh’s power sector projects. Out of the 12 projects under the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), 7 have been stagnant for 7 to 9 years, with average financial progress of 64.41% and actual progress of 74%. Additionally, 17% of BPDB projects have exceeded 4 to 6 years, with disappointing average financial and actual progress of 56.54% and 66.76%, respectively.
The report also reveals that only 56% of power plants are currently generating power due to inadequate feasibility studies and energy supply shortages, resulting in a substantial subsidy burden on the government. Projects under other entities, such as the Power Grid Company of Bangladesh (PGCB), Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC), and Dhaka Electricity Supply Company (DESCO), also face implementation challenges. The report emphasizes the need for improved progress and efficient management in Bangladesh’s power sector projects.
