MRA Issues Notices to 50 MFIs for Missing Annual Reports

Industry: Microfinance

The Microcredit Regulatory Authority (MRA), the central body overseeing microfinance operations, has issued show-cause notices to 50 microfinance institutions (MFIs) for failing to submit their annual reports. MFIs are typically required to submit these reports within three months of the fiscal year’s end, which is September. However, out of 750 NGO microfinance institutions, 102 did not meet this deadline. After an extension to January, 70 MFIs complied, but 50 still have not submitted their reports.

MRA Deputy Director stated that they will first hear from the MFIs before deciding on further action. Both the MFIs and the MRA have cited the high fees charged by chartered accountant firms for auditing as a key reason for the delay. The MRA plans to address this issue with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Bangladesh (ICAB) soon.
