Bangladesh’s MRT-5 (Southern) project is set to become Asia’s most expensive metro, costing over Tk 3,175 crore per kilometer. The project’s total cost is estimated at Tk 54,619 crore for a 17.2-kilometer route. Despite objections from the Planning Commission due to high costs in various sectors, the project is in its final approval stage. In comparison, other metro projects in Bangladesh, like MRT-6, cost Tk 1,574 crore per kilometer, while Line-1 and Line-5 (Northern) are estimated at Tk 1,682 crore and Tk 2,061 crore per kilometer, respectively. This cost discrepancy is significant when compared to metro projects in neighboring countries like India and China, as well as globally in cities like Dubai and Singapore.
