Mung bean exports from Bangladesh have witnessed a decrease this year, primarily due to reduced quality and size resulting from severe droughts during the growing period. Foreign buyers are showing less interest in purchasing the legume as a result. In 2022, approximately 700 tonnes of mung beans were exported to Japan, whereas this year, only 200 tonnes are expected to be shipped. Grameen Euglena, a joint venture between Japan’s Euglena Co Ltd and Grameen Krishi Foundation, has been exporting mung beans produced in Patuakhali since 2018. The company purchased 336 tonnes of the legume from contract farmers but could not collect the desired quantity of quality mung beans due to the smaller size caused by the severe heat. Despite the challenges, farmers are benefiting from the good prices offered by the company. The demand for mung beans remains high in Japan, where they are used as a vegetable and for their disease-preventing properties.
