National Bank Ltd (NBL) has elected Abdul Awal Mintoo as chairman of its board, following the Bangladesh Bank’s dissolution of the previous board to safeguard depositors’ interests. This marks the third board change since December 2023. Mintoo, a businessman and vice-chairman of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, was chosen along with Moazzam Hossain as vice-chairman.
The new board consists of three directors and four independent directors. This change follows the loss of control by the S Alam Group, which had influenced the bank’s governance. NBL has faced financial troubles, with significant losses in recent years, including Tk 1,497 crore in 2023 and an increase in losses to Tk 766 crore in Q1 2024.
