Nature Based Drainage Key to Tackle Waterlogging

Industry: Urban

City planners in Dhaka are urging the modernization of the drainage system to combat ongoing waterlogging problems. During a seminar on stormwater management, experts recommended implementing nature-based solutions like regular drain cleaning, preventing canal encroachment and pollution, and avoiding concrete use inside drains to enable water absorption into the ground. The city’s infrastructure is deemed insufficient for handling climate change, with increasing rainfall and fewer water reservoirs and rainwater storage options. Proposals included creating more water reservoirs akin to Hatirjheel, which serves as both a recreational area and a drainage solution. Political determination, similar to the successful construction of the Padma Bridge, was also urged to restore Dhaka’s canals.
