Deposits at non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs) have marginally risen despite a decline in the number of deposit accounts, suggesting a waning trust among investors. According to Bangladesh Bank data, NBFIs saw deposits amounting to Tk 44,830 crore by the end of 2023, marking a modest 2.46% growth from the previous year. However, the number of deposit accounts witnessed a sharp 17% decrease, dropping to 431,221 in 2023 from 521,556 in 2022. This trend may reflect concerns over the sector’s loan irregularities and scams, as well as the impact of soaring inflation, which reached 9.67%Â in February 2023. Small-scale businesses and importers are also redirecting funds to banks offering competitive interest rates, exacerbating the decline in NBFI deposits.
