In Q3 2023, Non-Bank Financial Institutions (NBFIs) witnessed a rise in loans by Tk 900 crore and a modest growth in deposits by Tk 37 crore, reflecting an assertive lending approach. NBFIs report deposits at Tk 44,720 crore and loans disbursed at Tk 73,338 crore, resulting in a loan-to-deposit ratio of 1.64. The sector faces concerns about an asset-liability mismatch due to the disproportionate increase in loans without a corresponding uptick in deposits. Experts note a decline in loan recovery to Tk 67,571 crore during July-September 2023, posing challenges for the NBFI sector. Despite deposit growth, the overall sector outlook remains fragile, marked by past irregularities and ongoing efforts to restore public trust.”
