The National Board of Revenue (NBR) aims to improve tax collection in fiscal 2024-25 through various measures. These include maintaining the tax-exempt income threshold at Tk 3.5 lakh to broaden the tax base and potentially boost revenue. Additionally, consideration is given to reinstating the highest tax rate to 30 percent, which had drawn criticism upon reduction. Tax exemptions for the IT and IT Enabled Services (ITES) sector might continue, although some sub-sectors may lose benefits. Rationalization of tax expenditure is on the agenda to balance revenue collection without adverse effects on businesses. There are discussions about extending tax benefits to vital IT sectors and announcing tax rates for the next fiscal year in advance. Moreover, plans entail reducing VAT exemptions on goods and services and imposing a standard 15 percent VAT to enhance collection.
