The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has reduced the carbonated beverages industry’s turnover tax from 5% to 3% for the current fiscal year, effective immediately according to a Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO). Until August 28, 2023 companies must pay 5% or a minimum tax, after which they’ll pay 3% on such tax. This policy shift has led to challenges for some smaller companies that face cost increases while competing with larger counterparts. The turnover tax was initially 0.60% and was raised to 5% by the government, resulting in beverage price hikes. The sector, with an annual turnover of around Tk 8,000 crore, includes over 100 companies producing various beverages for local and export markets.
