NBR Doubles Corporate Tax for Appliance Makers to 20%

Industry: Home Appliances
Economic Tag: Vat & Tax

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has doubled the corporate income tax rate to 20 percent for manufacturers of freezers, refrigerators, motorcycles, air conditioners, and compressors, starting from the fiscal year 2025-26. According to a notification issued today, these revised tax rates will be in effect until June 30, 2032. The decision aligns with the government’s efforts to enhance fiscal capacity and reduce reliance on borrowing, as recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) as part of the $4.7 billion loan approved for Bangladesh in January 2023. This move aims to rationalise exemptions, improve compliance, and address systemic issues in Bangladesh’s tax system, which has one of the lowest tax-to-GDP ratios globally.
