The National Board of Revenue (NBR) in Bangladesh is under pressure to collect Tk 89,224 crore in June to reach its revenue target of Tk 3,70,000 crore for the fiscal year 2022-23. However, provisional statistics show a shortfall of Tk 34,158 crore in revenue collection during the first 11 months of the fiscal year. Factors such as government austerity measures, a decline in imports, and soaring inflation have contributed to the overall decline in revenue collection. The NBR collected Tk 30,481 crore in May, marking an 11% growth during the July-May period. As the government sets a higher revenue target of Tk 4,30,000 crore for the next fiscal year, concerns about revenue collection persist. Addressing challenges like stabilizing imports, ensuring raw material supplies, and promoting uninterrupted production are crucial for meeting revenue goals.
