The National Board of Revenue (NBR) falls significantly short of its target to install electronic fiscal devices (EFDs) in businesses, crucial for increasing tax collection. In three years, only 18,000 businesses received EFDs, while the initial goal was 3.5 lakh establishments in five years. Challenges like selecting incapable firms, the COVID-19 pandemic, and dollar shortages hindered progress, and traders’ reluctance to use EFDs for tax evasion added to the issue. Despite aiming to boost VAT revenue through EFD installation, the NBR faces obstacles, impacting its ambitious revenue collection goals. The NBR now focuses on increasing EFD usage and awareness during VAT Week and VAT Day.
