NBR Implements Stricter Rules for Ambulance Imports

Industry: Automobile
Economic Tag: Vat & Tax

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has tightened rules on importing microbuses as ambulances due to widespread misuse. A minimum cabin length of nine feet is now required for eligibility, affecting models like Toyota Noah. This decision, announced alongside the unveiling of a Tk 7.97 lakh crore budget for 2024-25, aims to curb misuse of duty exemptions, which can amount to Tk 12 lakh per import. About 6,570 microbuses have been imported as ambulances since 2019-20, with duty exemptions totaling Tk 820 crore. However, many of these vehicles are being used for personal purposes instead of their intended function. To address this, recommendations include verifying previous use as an ambulance and ensuring the presence of necessary equipment. Implementing these measures is expected to reduce misuse of ambulance import facilities.
