The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has reduced import taxes on onions and potatoes to address rising prices and boost supply. Effective until November 30, tariffs on onions have been cut to 5 percent and on potatoes to 15 percent. This move aims to make these essential items more affordable.
The Bangladesh Trade and Tariff Commission (BTTC) had previously recommended removing import duties on onions and lowering tariffs on potatoes and eggs. While the NBR has not yet acted on egg tariffs, it has reduced duties on pesticides from 25 percent to 5 percent to support crop protection. The BTTC highlighted that recent flooding and a drop in potato production have exacerbated price increases. The NBR hopes these tax reductions will help stabilize prices and alleviate inflation pressures.
