The National Board of Revenue (NBR) in Bangladesh may fall short of the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) target for the current financial year due to economic challenges, according to the Policy Research Institute (PRI). The NBR could face a revenue shortfall of Tk 21,400 crore to meet the target of Tk 3.37 lakh crore. To address this, PRI-CDRM suggests various reforms, including expanding the tax net, increasing compliance with personal and corporate income taxes, implementing the VAT law, reforming short-term VAT policies, reducing tax exemptions, and restructuring state-owned enterprises. The NBR needs to mobilize Tk 1.11 lakh crore in the final quarter of this financial year to meet the IMF target.
