The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is considering imposing a 15% Value Added Tax (VAT) on metro rail tickets from July, as the current VAT waiver expires on June 30. This move aligns with IMF terms to reduce taxes. While metro rail tickets are fully air-conditioned and subject to VAT under current laws, discussions with the metro rail company have been ongoing, with recent proposals met with disagreement. The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) argues against VAT imposition, citing the lack of class distinction and the public transport nature of the metro rail. Despite NBR’s efforts since 2023, including a temporary VAT exemption until June 2024, analysts caution against burdening passengers with increased ticket prices.
