The National Board of Revenue (NBR) plans to impose a 25 percent import duty on cars for lawmakers, reversing a tax exemption that resulted in Tk 5,147 crore waived over 15 years. Between January 2009 and April 2023, lawmakers imported 572 vehicles duty-free, valued at Tk 397.38 crore. The proposal to withdraw this benefit will be presented to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, aiming to improve Bangladesh’s tax-GDP ratio as per IMF conditions. Lawmakers received Tk 816 crore in duty-free benefits on car imports in fiscal 2022-23 and Tk 351 crore in the current fiscal year. The NBR data reveals that most cars were imported from Japan, including high-end models with engine capacities over 4.5 litres.
